Black Sesame Ice Cream

07.30.16

Summer is the time for ice cream! Hearing the ice cream truck down the street takes me back to when I was a kid, swimming in the pool, rushing out as fast as I could to catch the truck just in time. At the truck window, the debate was always between a Firecracker popsicle, a snow cone or a Chipwich ice cream sandwich. Eight times out of ten the Chipwich won.

Today, if the ice cream truck served good ice cream, I’d probably still be running to it. But since Chipwich’s no longer do the trick, I’ve learned how to make the best ice cream at home. And I’m sometimes known to place a scoop between two cookies…

But this black sesame ice cream is best in a wafer cone (not a sugar cone), eaten on a hot summer night. It’s got that nutty sweetness that almost tastes like peanut butter but is more subtle. Summer Sunflower Seed Pesto

07.20.16

The basil came from our garden and I remember squealing with delight when I’d hear the food processor buzzing across the house. It meant time for summer pesto!

My sunflower seed version is what I like to call a “poor woman’s” pesto because sunflower seeds are cheap and abundant. Pine nuts on the other hand, are not.

Citrus Curd Tart

06.28.16

I love citrus, especially in the summer. It’s punchy, refreshing and the perfect cap to a dinner party or summer picnic. This citrus curd tart makes guests oooh and ahhh, and lately, it’s become a party trick favorite.

I was inspired by the tarte au citron I ate in Paris on our honeymoon. It had a crunchy buttery crust and a deeply rich citrus curd filling, with a simple lime zest garnish. It was zippy, rich and I’ve since vowed to master the art of the tart.

Because of my Paris experience, I wanted to go very french with the crust–so I experimented with David Lebovitz’ traditional tart dough recipe. Just a warning–it is totally weird. But it’s awesome because it stands up to looser fillings and has never once gotten soggy on me.
